Plantation is a town west of Fort Lauderdale and north of Miami. Despite the name, Plantation is mostly composed of metropolitan areas. In the western part of the town, however, there are several small lakes.
A few reviews on TripAdvisor say Plantation is a relatively safe place and good for those who want a balance between annual income and the cost of living.
Among the factors of the cost of living is car insurance. This guide will go through each of those factors and give you information on average annual rates from major car insurance companies in the town of Plantation.

The Cost of Car Insurance in Plantation
If you’re going to drive anywhere in the United States, you’re going to need car insurance. The average annual premium for car insurance in Florida is $4,681, but the average cost of car insurance in Plantation is slightly lower at $4,643.
Why is it this much? Car insurance companies have to assess the risk of each policyholder and the value of the policyholder’s vehicles. These assessments of risk can be looked at through different factors. This section of the guide explains each of those factors and how much their annual premiums are.
Do gender and age affect my car insurance in Plantation?
Car insurance companies often issue premiums based on age, gender, and marital status. These factors will determine the risk of the policy.
Statistics show that drivers who are younger and single tend to take more risks while operating a motor vehicle. Also, younger drivers are generally less experienced than older drivers.
Men take more risks on the roadway than women. Older married drivers, however, seem to be more efficient drivers, or it could simply be they’re less likely to be in a car accident.
First, let’s look at some average car insurance premiums as it relates to age.
City | 17 years old | 25 years old | 35 years old | 60 years old |
---|---|---|---|---|
Plantation | $11,806 | $4,470 | $3,923 | $3,586 |
Seventeen-year-old driver premiums are so expensive that the cost of insurance rivals college tuition rates. All other drivers, on average, pay at least $7,300 less per year.
What about the car insurance premiums (often referred to as rates) based on gender? Let’s review the average annual premium based on gender.
City | Male | Female |
---|---|---|
Plantation | $5,946 | $5,636 |
Male drivers pay $310 more than female drivers in Plantation.
Finally, let’s examine how much car insurance is on average when marital status, age, and gender are factors in determining policy.
Plantation, FL Demographic | Average Annual Premium |
---|---|
Average | $5,946 |
Single 17-year-old female | $10,698 |
Single 17-year-old male | $12,913 |
Single 25-year-old female | $4,326 |
Single 25-year-old male | $4,615 |
Married 35-year-old female | $3,968 |
Married 35-year-old male | $3,878 |
Married 60-year-old female | $3,554 |
Married 60-year-old male | $3,618 |
Policies are more than double of what all other drivers pay for car insurance. The cost to insure teen drivers is expensive. It would be a good idea to ask an insurance agent about discounts you’re eligible for.
The median age of Plantation residents is 39 years old.
Car insurance companies are not punishing policyholders for having teen drivers on their insurance, but the likelihood of an accident for teen drivers is higher than average.
Drivers who are 25 years and older pay significantly less. The average annual premiums for each age over 25 was even cheaper than the average amount based on age, gender, and marital status.
Why is the average in this table different than the car insurance premium in Plantation? The average in the demographics table is based on the average age, gender, and marital status of Plantation residents.
What are the cheapest ZIP codes in Plantation?
Did you know car insurance companies issue premiums based on ZIP codes? Each ZIP code carries its average premium for many reasons.
One reason is the average cost of property in a particular area. Areas, where property value is over a certain level, may warrant more expensive premiums. Listed below is a table that shows the car insurance premiums for each Plantation ZIP code.
Plantation, FL Zip Codes | Average Annual Rate |
---|---|
33322 | $4,643 |
33323 | $4,566 |
33324 | $4,498 |
33325 | $4,498 |
33388 | $4,504 |
Do you see how the averages vary? Each area is different. Some ZIP codes are areas where there are more risks for motorists, so car insurance companies have to issue premiums based on the chance of risk in the area.

Best Car Insurance for Coverage Level Rates
When you’re enrolling in car insurance, you’ll have an option to choose what kind of coverage you want. The bare minimum requirement is liability coverage. State law requires that you have it.
Florida’s minimum requirements for car insurance is called the 10/20/10 rule.
This means that motorists living in Florida, including the city of Plantation, must have liability car insurance with coverage limits that cover $10,000 for bodily injury of one person per accident, $20,000 for bodily injury of two or more people per accident, and $10,000 for property damage per accident.
What if that’s not enough? Sometimes $10,000 isn’t enough money to cover the property damage of a new vehicle, especially if that vehicle is a total loss. You’ll need a higher coverage limit.
Higher coverage limits such as 50/100/50 and 100/300/100 increase car insurance premiums per year. Let’s look at some of the coverage level rates from each major company in Plantation.

Best Car Insurance for Credit History Rates
Car insurance companies also look at your credit history when they are considering a policy with you. Experian reassures us that when car insurance companies review your credit score, it doesn’t affect your credit score. So why do car insurance companies need to see it?
Experian says, “Credit scores can help provide insurance companies a basis to determine your financial ability to make premium payments on time.”
In addition to their estimation of whether you’ll make timely payments, car insurance companies relate credit history to a policyholder’s chances of filing a claim. According to Experian, there’s a correlation between a person’s credit score and the total cost to insure that person.
The better your credit, the less you’ll pay for car insurance. Let’s see the average based on credit history.
Group | Poor | Fair | Good |

Driving in Plantation
The chances of getting in an accident are lower than in some cities in Florida, but the risk is still there. People must use the same level of alertness when driving through any city in the United States.
This section gives detail about the roadways in the city such as highways, road conditions, and automated enforcement. In addition to roadway information, we’ll talk about vehicle data in Plantation, traffic congestion levels, weather, public transit, and fatality rates.
What are the major roads in Plantation?
Although the town is small, a lot of people pass through its major roads. Some of those roads lead to an interstate or Florida state roads. This section will show and explain some roadway information that’ll help your commute through Plantation.
Major Highways
This sub-section will cover the major roadways in the city.
There’s one major interstate in Plantation, which is Interstate 595 (I-595). Other major highways in the town are state roads. They are FL-84, FL-736, FL-817, FL-823, FL-838, FL-842, US-441, and the Florida Turnpike.
Here’s a drive-time video showing a car ride on I-595 to Broward County, Fla.
There are two toll roads. One is FL-869 toll, which is west of Plantation, and the other toll road is the Florida Turnpike, located in the eastern area of Plantation.
The FL-869 toll road runs into highways FL-84 and I-595. The Florida Turnpike travels from Marion County, Florida, to Miami-Dade County. If you’re thinking of using any toll road in Florida, it may be convenient for you to get a SunPass.
A SunPass allows a driver to pay at cashless toll booths across Florida. The driver must set up a SunPass account, so when they pass through a tollway, they will be billed to that account. SunPass devices cost around $20 each.
The initial cost of purchasing the device is offset when drivers use toll roads with a SunPass. Most drivers will pay the lowest tolls available on Florida’s highways with a SunPass.
Popular Road Trips/Sites
Many visitors who come to plantation often visit Fort Lauderdale and Orlando due to the tourist attractions in those neighboring cities. Plantation appears to be a good resting pint between the two cities.
Road Conditions
There are no road conditions from Tripnet listed for Plantation or the closest city to it, which is Fort Lauderdale. We could use Miami’s road conditions and vehicle operating costs, but it may not accurate. Here’s a short video of some of the roadways in Plantation.
From the video, we can see a driver riding smoothly along the highway during the night. We can assume that major roads in Plantation are mostly fair.
Does Plantation use speeding or red-light cameras?
The state of Florida is one of the states that use an automated enforcement system. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute reported that Florida only uses red-light cameras.
What about Plantation? Does the city use them? Most counties and cities across Florida comply with state law. Expect red-light cameras to be in areas where there’s a lot of through traffic. Here’s a news report about Fort Lauderdale lawmakers’ fight to keep red-light cameras.
Red-light cameras may be up for the debate as you driving on the roadway, but it’s important to follow the road laws until lawmakers come to a definitive decision, so it’s best to drive as if the red-light cameras are still there.

Speed traps are often responses from complaints made by residents in the area, other drivers, or an increase of motor vehicle accidents near or on that roadway.
The latest speed trap as reported on speedtraps.org was in 2013, which was on West Sunrise Boulevard opposite of Plantation Middle School.

How is traffic in Plantation?
Traffic is one of the biggest challenges when commuting through any location in the country. During peak hours of the day, traffic tends to get heavy, but every city, county, and town has different levels of traffic. Is Plantation known for its traffic delays? This section will give details on the daily traffic conditions in the city.
Traffic Congestion in Plantation
We can determine the traffic forecast by reviewing web services that track traffic daily. Services such as Inrix, Numbeo, and TomTom broadcast traffic congestion daily and annually. However, Plantation doesn’t have any major traffic reports on either of these web tracking services despite being in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area.
Do they have problems with traffic? Watch this news report from a local Plantation news station.
This video is an example of how common traffic congestion is even though the population of an area is smaller than bigger cities. Sometimes, spending an extra few minutes at work to avoid heavy traffic conditions may be better for your driving experience.
Transportation
Next, let’s talk about the daily commute. How much time does it take for drivers to get to work and the commute from work to home?
The national average commute time is roughly 25 minutes. That’s about a total time of 50 minutes each day if you look at commute times on average in the United States.
Plantation falls directly within the national average commute time. Therefore, a motorist total time spent driving is a little less than an hour a day commuting. Only 2 percent of people in Plantation have super commutes.
Super commutes are commute times that are longer than 90 minutes.
The common method of commuting through Plantation is by driving. Data USA reported that nearly 82 percent of people drove alone to work, followed by 9 percent of people who carpooled. About 6 percent of people worked from home.
Busiest Highways
The busiest highways in Plantation are the conjunction highway of FL-84 and I-595 and the Florida Turnpike. The Florida Turnpike is used by businesses and residents alike. Many drivers use the turnpike to commute around the state of Florida.
If you’re commuting around Plantation and want to use any of these highways, expect longer-than-average commute times, especially around 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., which are peak traffic hours.
How safe are Plantation streets and roads?
Safety is vital when operating a motor vehicle. Even though you can do everything you can to prevent an accident, they still occur. Some of those accidents end with fatalities.
A way to look at the risks of driving your motor vehicle is to review the fatality numbers of your local area. Let’s start with Plantation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) researches crash and fatality data every year and reports it to the public. Their extensive research generally reviews fatalities by county rather than by city. Since Plantation is in Broward County, we’ll start there.
Here are the total numbers for all fatal crashes in Broward County.
County Summary | 2017 All Crash Fatalities | 2018 All Crash Fatalities |
---|---|---|
Broward County | 226 | 237 |
Fatalities in Broward County increased within a year.
We can break down the crash types by looking at each category from the NHTSA. Some crash types are in two or more categories. In other words, a single-vehicle fatal crash may have involved a driver under the influence, so that fatality will be considered in both categories. Let’s review each fatality by crash type.
Crash Type in Broward County | 2017 Fatalities | 2018 Fatalities |
---|---|---|
Alcohol-Impaired Fatalities | 53 | 58 |
Single-Vehicle Crash Fatalities | 133 | 133 |
Speeding-Related Fatalities | 22 | 24 |
Roadway Departure Fatalities | 63 | 69 |
Intersection Fatalities | 87 | 83 |
Passenger Car Occupant Fatalities | 83 | 76 |
Pedestrian Fatalities | 64 | 71 |
Pedal cyclist Fatalities | 10 | 16 |
Alcohol-impaired driver fatalities increased by five from 2017 to 2018. Car insurance companies could increase high-risk driver rates based on this number.
Single-vehicle crash fatalities didn’t change, but speed-related crash fatalities increased by two. The number of fatalities justifies law enforcement for conducting speed traps around the city. They could be saving someone from a terrible accident.
Roadway departure crash fatalities are accidents where vehicles collide and go off the roadway upon impact. The total fatalities in roadway departures increased by six from 2017 to 2018.
Intersection crash fatalities normally happen within the urban areas, but they can occur around major highways, especially when highways run through urban traffic. In this category, crash fatalities decreased by four.
Passenger car occupant fatalities are fatalities where a passenger was affected in a fatal accident. There was a decrease in passenger car occupants from 2017 to 2018, but the fatalities for pedestrians increased from 64 to 71 fatalities.
The lowest values out of all the fatalities were pedal cyclist fatalities. Pedal cyclists are people who use a bike or vehicle that has pedals equipped on it to move. There were 10 fatalities in 2017, but it increased to 16 fatalities in 2018.
Now that you’ve seen the fatalities by crash type, you’re probably wondering what type of roads they crashed on.
The NHTSA measures road fatalities through their Fatality Analysis Report System (FARS). Here’s the FARS data from the NHTSA.
Florida Area | Rural | Urban | Freeway and Expressway | Other | Minor Arterial | Collector Arterial | Local | Unknown | Total Fatal Crashes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Broward County | 10 | 20 | 13 | 57 | 29 | 14 | 15 | 69 | 227 |
Florida | 125 | 131 | 98 | 945 | 518 | 328 | 257 | 513 | 2,915 |
Compared to Florida, Broward County has a minimum amount of fatalities on its roads. The total fatal crashes for Broward County is 7.79 percent of Florida’s total fatal crashes.
The NHTSA categorizes roads by the amount of traffic they hold. Arterial roads are for heavy traffic. These roads are classified as highways or minor arterials (or city highways) depending on the traffic. Collector roads are roads that collect traffic and bring drivers to arterial roads (highways).
The last thing we’ll review is data from the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding railroad fatality data.
Highway User Speed | Calendar Year | County | Highway | Highway User Type | Rail Equipment Type | Non-Suicide Fatality | Non-Suicide Injury |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
0 | 2013 | BROWARD | N. E. 3RD AVENUE | Automobile | Freight Train | 0 | 0 |
1 | 2013 | BROWARD | SUNRISE BOULEVARD | Automobile | Freight Train | 0 | 0 |
0 | 2014 | BROWARD | SISTRUNK BLVD | Automobile | Commuter | 0 | 0 |
15 | 2014 | BROWARD | AIRPORT CROSSING | Automobile | Yard/Switch | 0 | 0 |
40 | 2014 | BROWARD | CYPRESS CREEK ROAD | Automobile | Commuter | 1 | 0 |
0 | 2015 | BROWARD | N. E. 3RD AVENUE | Pedestrian | Freight Train | 1 | 0 |
- | 2016 | BROWARD | ELLER DRIVE | Pedestrian | Freight Train | 0 | 1 |
The Highway User Speed is the speed the driver or person was going when the incident occurred. Only two fatalities and one injury were reported. One incident involved a vehicle while the other two incidents involving pedestrians.

Motor vehicles produce smog, and it causes a lot of health problems for some people in the world. Some states mandate that drivers get emission tests as a way to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards in their local area.
Regardless of whether a state or city has these regulations, the EPA monitors air quality anyway. Every year the EPA calculates the air quality through the air quality index.
The air quality Index (AQI) measures how clean or polluted a city’s air is.
Although the EPA doesn’t monitor all specific areas across the country, they report the AQI of larger metro areas, which include cities and counties not listed in their database. Plantation is in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro area. The EPA does have AQI results for that area. Let’s take a look at the AQI.

Unique City Laws
Florida has a hands-free law that bans all drivers from using a device while they are operating a motor vehicle. Teen drivers aren’t allowed to use a cellphone while driving unless it’s an emergency. Adults can’t use a cellphone while operating a vehicle while driving near school departures.
All cities and counties in Florida are compliant with state law, so it’s likely that if a driver is caught violating the hands-free law, they will be fined.
We searched for laws in Plantation regarding food trucks but only found county laws that relate to food truck law. Since Plantation is in Broward County, the food truck vendor will likely have to comply with Broward County regulations regarding food trucks.
The Law Firm of Jurado and Farshchian says that food trucks will need these things to operate a food truck in Broward County:
- A Business tax application
- A street vendor’s permit application
- Driver’s license
- Copy of vehicle’s registration
- Pictures of the cart — front, side, and rear
- Business name and phone number on the vehicle
- Proof of an Insurance policy
In addition to obtaining all these required documents, you’ll have to pass a health code inspection from county or state officials to operate the food truck.
One can really enjoy the culture of the people in the city when food trucks huddle together during events. Plantation has allowed that in their food truck law. It takes a few steps, however, to share that culture
Tiny homes are legal in Florida but are under strict regulations. Some of the homes are considered to be similar to mobile homes according to some laws and lawmakers.
Do your due diligence and research the county zoning laws before you decide to build a tiny home. This video shares more information on what to consider before building a tiny house.
Tiny Homes may be legal but they are buried under a lot of litigation. You’ll need permits, inspectors, and approval from local government.
There’s not much to parking in Plantation. The city rules are standard. Commercial vehicles or buses can’t be parked on residential district streets. Commercial vehicles must be parked in an enclosed garage or inside a carport. The same goes for recreational vehicles such as RVs, boats, and campers.
Parking situations often get complicated during events and peak hours of the day. To avoid getting a parking ticket, don’t illegally park or spend too much time in a space you didn’t pay for or has insufficient payment. Plantation may be more lenient but don’t count it.

Plantation Car Insurance FAQs
For our final section, we want to answer many frequently asked questions about car insurance. If you would like a particular question asked, use our comment section to ask a question or to make comment about Plantation, Fla. insurance options. Let’s continue through this section with a few questions we didn’t elaborate on in the guide.
#1 — Is personal injury protection required when I get car insurance?
Yes. Personal injury protection or PIP is required and is coupled with your liability car insurance. If you think you need a higher coverage limit, ask your car insurance company for those options.
#2 — What is full coverage car insurance?
Full coverage car insurance is the combination of liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. It’s much more expensive than the minimum requirements but provides absolute protection in case you’re in an accident.
#3 — I’m a high-risk driver. Can I find car insurance?
Yes. Some high-risk drivers are faced with higher premiums due to their driving record. If a car insurance company agrees to give you a policy when you have a bad driving record, consider yourself lucky.
Drivers who can’t find car insurance through the voluntary market have to report their attempts to the Department of Motor Vehicles in their local area to receive SR-22 coverage. That’s coverage where the state finds a car insurance company for you.
Nonpayment or getting into an accident, DUI, or speeding violation could make you ineligible to receive SR-22 coverage.
#4 — Can I save money if I use my parents’ insurance policy?
Yes. There’s something called nonowners car insurance. This will allow your parents to add your vehicle to your policy. Due to the number of people on the policy, the car insurance company may give you and your parents a discount.
#5 — Does my car insurance rate depend on the age of my vehicle?
Yes. Older vehicles are worth less money than many newer vehicles. If you were to get into an accident, it may be less than the coverage limit for liability car insurance. Car insurance premiums for older vehicles are typically lower.
